Bhutanese King joins Independence Day reception at Bangabhaban

In honor of the nation’s 54th anniversary of independence and National Day, 2024, President Mohammed Shahabuddin and his spouse Dr. Rebeka Sultana gave a reception at Bangabhaban today. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, who was on a visit, were also in attendance.

As part of the 54th Independence Day festivities, the Bhutanese King is currently in Bangladesh on a four-day official visit, extended at the president’s and prime minister’s special request.

for approximately five o’clock in the evening, he and his spouse Queen Jetsun Pema arrived for the Bangabhaban lawn reception.

There were up to 2600 invitations for the Independence and National Day reception.

The reception was attended by Sheikh Rehana, the sister of Prime Minister Bangabandhu, Dr. Rebeka Sultan, the spouse of the President, Saima Wazed, the daughter of the PM, and the South East Asian Regional Director of the World Health Organization (WHO).


Among the guests were members of the cabinet, advisors, state ministers, members of the Bhutanese delegation, foreign diplomats, judges of the Supreme Court, high-ranking officials from the three services, members of parliament, prominent political figures, scholars, business community executives, performers, brave Freedom Fighters, and relatives of distinguished citizens and recipients of the Birshreshtha gallantry award.

Leading members of the civil and military authorities were present at the reception, along with media figures such as editors and journalist leaders.

President Shahabuddin, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, President’s wife Dr. Rebeka Sultana, and the Bhutanese Queen cut a cake in honor of the occasion at the VVIP Enclosure on the eastern side of the green field.
