Chad junta chief says to contest May 6 presidential vote

Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, the head of the Chad junta, who came to power in 2021 upon the passing of his father, the longtime ruler, declared on Saturday that he would run in the much awaited May 6 presidential election.

“I, Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, am a candidate for the 2024 presidential election under the banner of the For a United Chad coalition,” he said in a speech.
