Ten Hag defends Martinez decision after injury blow

After Lisandro Martinez, a defender for Manchester United, sustained a knee injury that would keep him out for two months, Erik ten Hag has justified his choice to allow Martinez continue playing.

Martinez sustained an injury during the second half of United’s 3-0 victory against West Ham last Saturday, but Ten Hag’s decision to hold off on replacing the center defender was questioned.

Martinez was first hurt, got treated, then played for a little while longer before collapsing once more and quitting.

The 26-year-old’s ligament damage in his right knee will sideline him for a significant period, but Ten Hag said injury substitutions can be a “grey area”.

Asked if carrying on had aggravated Martinez’s injury, leading to a longer spell out of action, Ten Hag told reporters on Thursday: “I don’t think so, but it was his decision.
