President appoints Sheikh Hasina as Prime Minister

Sheikh Hasina was named prime minister by President Mohammed Shahabuddin today, the Cabinet Division announced in a gazette statement.

“In accordance with clause (3) of Article 56 of the Bangladesh Constitution, the President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh decided to appoint Sheikh Hasina as the Prime Minister,” said the notification, issued shortly after Sheikh Hasina called on him this afternoon.

The Awami League Parliamentary Party (ALPP) chose her to be the Leader of the House earlier today, shortly after they were sworn in as Members of Parliament. The statement stated that the decision was taken because the “majority of the parliament members laid their confidence on her.”

According to the notification, the President also approved the formation of a new cabinet led by her.

It said that the current cabinet would be considered to have been discarded with the establishment of the new one.
