Sri Lanka revokes sacking of cricket board

In an attempt to lift the suspension imposed by the International Cricket Council, Sri Lanka’s sports minister rescinded the removal of the nation’s cricket board on Tuesday due to accusations of corruption.

“I signed a gazette to revoke the decision appointing an interim committee for Sri Lanka Cricket, aiming to lift our ICC suspension,” Harin Fernando said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Fernando said that he had also requested the ICC’s “observations” regarding an audit report concerning the board’s purported corruption during the T20 World Cup in Australia last year.

Arjuna Ranatunga, the captain of Sri Lanka that won the World Cup in 1996, led an interim panel that was appointed by Fernando’s predecessor, Roshan Ranasinghe, who dismissed the elected board in November.

As a result, the ICC suspended Sri Lanka, citing the board’s inability to stop political meddling in the game’s management.

The controversy over corruption in the board, the richest sporting body in the otherwise bankrupt nation, led to the sacking of Ranasinghe late last month.
