Saleemul Huq, a climate scientist, passes away at the age of 71

Saleemul Huq, 71, a well-known specialist on climate change and the director of the International Center for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD), passed away on Saturday night at his Dhaka home.

A family source claims that Huq passed away at around ten o’clock at night from a heart attack at his Gulshan home. Huq was also a professor at the Independent University of Bangladesh (IUB) in addition to his role as Director of ICCCAD.

Professor Saleemul Huq was an authority on development, the environment, and climate change. His research attempted to create connections between sustainable development and adaptation to climate change from the standpoint of developing nations, particularly the least developed nations.

In its statement, ICCCAD took to Facebook and said: “A visionary leader who was not only a torchbearer in Bangladesh’s fight against climate change but for the entire global community, his unparalleled legacy will remain a shining example for years and generations to come.” “.

Saleemul Huq, a specialist in climate change, has been named one of the top ten scientists of 2022 by the prestigious worldwide scientific publication Nature.

At the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Professor Huq was present for every session. His role in the Least Developed Countries (LDC) Group of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change included training LDC negotiators and providing advice on adaptation, loss and damage, and climate finance. He was also an active member of the group.

Professor Huq was listed as one of the top twenty global influencers on climate change policy in 2019 and has written hundreds of scientific and popular articles. In Bangladesh, Professor Huq was a preeminent scientist on climate change.
