US Under Secretary Uzra Zeya arrives in Dhaka

Uzra Zeya, the US Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, arrived in this city this evening to begin a three-day trip.

At Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Under Secretary Uzra Zeya was welcomed by Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen.

According to the US Department of State, the Under Secretary will speak about common humanitarian issues in Bangladesh, such as the Rohingya refugee crisis, labor issues, human rights, free and fair elections, and the fight against human trafficking.

According to a diplomatic source, the US group was expected to speak with Bangladeshi officials and leaders on issues pertaining to human rights, the Rohingya crisis, and the political climate in the run-up to the early January 2024 elections.

The majority of the Under Secretary’s other activities will take place on Thursday in Dhaka, but on early Wednesday, she and her group will head straight to Cox’s Bazar to visit the Rohingya people.

In addition to her talks with the Law and Home Ministers and Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen, Zeya is also set to meet with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Private Industries and Investment Adviser Salman F Rahman, according to the official source.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the US delegation includes Donald Lu, the US Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, and Znjali Kaur, the US Deputy Assistant Administrator of the Bureau for Asia, USAID.

Zeya is in charge of leading international diplomatic efforts to enhance democracy, improve human rights for all, aid refugees and provide humanitarian aid, advance collaboration in the fight against drugs, combat corruption and intolerance, avert war, and end human trafficking.

Zeya is a relatively senior US official, and the scope of her job, according to foreign secretary Masud Momen, “is quite wide.”
