Bangladesh elected FAO council member for 2nd consecutive term

Bangladesh has been unanimously elected to the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) Council for the second consecutive term from the Asia Region, serving for three years from 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2027.

According to a message received here, the election will take place today at the 43rd Conference of the FAO, which was held in Rome yesterday (6 July 2023) and attended by 194 member states.

As a member of the FAO Council, Bangladesh will lead the organization at both the policy and executive levels, deciding and advising on matters pertaining to the implementation of program and budget, monitoring of activities under the new results-based framework, monitoring of governance decisions, and oversight of the organization’s administration for three years.

The Bangladesh embassy in Rome remained actively engaged in obtaining support for Bangladesh.

The FAO Conference’s 43rd Session is now taking place in a hybrid format at the FAO Headquarters in Rome. Bangladesh’s team of eight people is led by Agricultural Minister Dr Muhammad Abdur Razzaque.

Agriculture Secretary Wahida Akter is also part of the mission, as is Bangladesh Ambassador to Italy and Permanent Representative to FAO Md Shameem Ahsan. The Permanent Representative and Economic Counsellor from Bangladesh’s embassy attended the conference in person.

The FAO is a United Nations specialized organization that leads international efforts to end hunger. Bangladesh was also chosen as a member of the FAO Council during its 42nd Session for the term 01 July 2022 to 30 June 2024.
