Japan kabuki star arrested over mother’s suicide

According to local media, one of Japan’s best-known kabuki actors was detained Tuesday on suspicion of assisting his mother’s suicide after both parents were discovered unconscious at his house last month.

As public broadcaster NHK and other outlets reported his arrest, citing police sources, TV footage showed a car presumably transporting Ennosuke Ichikawa from a hospital to a police station.

However, Tokyo police were unable to confirm the arrest of Ichikawa, 47, a classical theatrical star who has appeared in London, Amsterdam, and at the Paris Opera House.

Rescue workers discovered Ichikawa’s 76-year-old father, a kabuki performer, and his 75-year-old mother unconscious at his home in the capital in May.

Both were eventually confirmed deceased, and authorities are also looking into his father’s death, according to sources.

Ichikawa was discovered collapsed at his house that day and was transported to the hospital for questioning.
