Neymar faces possible $1 mn fine over Brazil property work

Authorities said a “major construction” project at Brazilian football star Neymar’s residence in Rio de Janeiro state was halted on Thursday due to “environmental infractions,” which could result in a $1 million fine.

The project was underway “without environmental authorization” on the opulent property of the Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil national team star in Mangaratiba, around 130 kilometers (80 miles) from Rio de Janeiro, according to the mayor’s office.

Following complaints on social media, authorities discovered “various environmental infractions,” including the diversion of a stream and the illicit withdrawal of water from a river.

They also discovered illicit excavation and transfer of dirt, stones, and rocks, as well as the unauthorized usage of beach sand.

“The next step will be to make an assessment of the irregularities found and issue a fine which, according to estimates and in view of the environmental damage caused, will not be less than five million reais (about $1 million),” the mayor’s office said.

Neymar’s Brazilian reps have yet to react to AFP’s request for comment.

Neymar da Silva Santos, the footballer’s father, was present during the inspection and can be heard shouting with officials in a video released by authorities and reported by local media.

Neymar purchased the property in 2016. It is on 10,000 square meters (2.5 acres) of land and contains a helipad, spa, and gym, according to local media.

The 31-year-old attacker is now recovering from surgery on his right ankle, which he had in March in Doha, Qatar.

He hasn’t played since February, and it’s unclear whether he’ll stay at PSG.
