On Wednesday, Robert Kennedy Jr., a well-known opponent of vaccinations whose uncle “JFK” served as the 35th US president, publicly declared his own run for the presidency.
Despite frequently stating his intention to run for office, incumbent President Joe Biden, 69, plans to challenge the 69-year-old outsider for the Democratic Party’s candidacy.
Kennedy’s father “RFK” was the Democratic president John F. Kennedy’s attorney general and afterwards a New York senator.
The killings of both Kennedy brothers—JFK in 1963 and RFK in 1968, while he was running for president—are considered two of the most important political moments in US history.
In spite of his decades-long career as an environmental lawyer, RFK Jr. has come to be renowned since 2005 for his advocacy of vaccine debunking hypotheses, particularly those that claim vaccines cause autism.
“I’ve come here today to announce my candidacy for the Democratic nomination for president of the United States,” he said at his campaign launch event in Massachusetts, the stronghold of the Kennedy family.
Many of the crown’s Boston-based supporters wore caps bearing anti-vaccination themes.
Kennedy swore to “tell the truth to the American people” in order to end the country’s severe political polarization.
Kennedy’s campaign is a long shot against incumbent Biden, whose own public launch is anticipated later in the year, but no specific date has been set. This is true even though Kennedy has a very well-known name.
A few additional candidates have also declared their intention to oppose the 80-year-old Biden for the Democratic nomination, but no well-known figures have entered the contest.
