PM Sheikh Hasina seeks dev partners’ 5 key supports for LDCs

Today, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked development partners for five crucial supports to help Least Developed Countries (LDCs) build smart, creative, and knowledge-based societies that will advance a stable, fair, and inclusive international community.

“A smart, innovative and knowledge-based society will help promote a peaceful, just and inclusive society,” she said.

Speaking as the chief guest at a side event named “Investment in Research and Development in LDCs for Smart and Innovative Societies” hosted at Auditorium-3 of Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) here, the premier elaborated the five essential supports of development partners.

The occasion took place here in conjunction with the 5th UN Convention on LDCs.

Sheikh Hasina urged the provision of suitable incentives to the global private sector for effective technology transfer to LDCs, including for climate action, as the first crucial support of development allies.

Secondly, she said: help to invest in digital infrastructures to reduce the broadband divide and tech discriminations in LDCs.

Thirdly, she said foster collaboration among research professionals and institutes to address issues and challenges facing LDCs.

The premier demanded that LDC exemptions under the TRIPS agreement continue even after graduation, particularly for pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals.

Finally, she advised supporting the creation of an intellectual property regime that is favorable to LDCs’ growth and innovation.

Queen Hasina also spoke of her desire to advance the next vision, which calls for the creation of a “Smart Bangladesh,” by 2041.
