President and Prime Minister honor Language Heroes

On Amar Ekushey and World Mother Language Day, President M. Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina lavishly paid respect to the martyrs of the historic Language Revolution.

At one minute after midnight tonight, the Heads of State and Government both paid respect by laying wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar in this location.

President Abdul Hamid arrived at the Central Shaheed Minar three minutes before today’s zero hour, while Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived at the Shaheed Minar premises six minutes before 12 o’clock.

“Amar Vaiyer Rokte Rangano Ekushey February… Ami Ki Vulitey Pari?” played on the Amar Ekushey as President Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina slowly made their way to the Central Shaheed Minar’s altar.

The wreath was originally placed at the Central Shaheed Minar by the President. The premier laid the wreath at the Shaheed Minar shortly after the President.

They observed a long period of solemn silence as a sign of heartfelt respect for the lives of the Language Heroes.

Speaking at the event were the Prime Minister’s advisors, Ministers, Members of Parliament, Chiefs of the Three Services, Senior Awami League Leaders, Freedom Fighters, Foreign Diplomats, and High Civil and Military Officials.

Sheikh Hasina, the president of the ruling Bangladesh Awami League, afterwards laid another wreath at the Shaheed Minar on the party’s behalf, joined by cabinet ministers and other party officials.

Then, wreaths were laid at the Central Shaheed Minar by Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and Deputy Speaker Shamsul Hoque Tuku.

The Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University, Professor Dr. Md Akhtaruzzaman, and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina welcomed the President when he arrived at the Shaheed Minar.

Leader of the Jatiya Party GM Quader also laid a wreath at the Shaheed Minar on behalf of the Opposition Leader in the Parliament Begum Raushan Ershad.

Later, wreaths were laid at the Shaheed Minar by the heads of the three services, the inspector general of police, ambassadors and high commissioners from various nations, the leaders of various international organizations, the Rapid Action Battlement (RAB), the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB), combat wounded freedom fighters, the Dhaka University Alumni Association, and the Jatiya Samjatantrik Dal (JSD), among others.

In order to commemorate the heroic deeds of the language heroes on this day in 1952, hundreds of people from all walks of life afterward walked barefoot to the Shaheed Minar while holding flowers in their hands and chanting “Amar Bhaiyer Rokte Rangano Ekushey February.”
