Israel asks NATO to counter the threat from Iran

As Tehran provides drones to Russia for its conflict in Ukraine, Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Thursday urged NATO to take a tougher stance on Iran.

“The crisis there goes beyond the boundaries of Ukraine, with the Iranian threat now at Europe’s doorstep,” Herzog said on a visit to NATO headquarters in Brussels.

“The illusion of distance can no longer hold. NATO must take the strongest possible stance against the Iranian regime including through economic, legal and political sanctions and credible military deterrence.”

The symbolic head of state briefed NATO’s top decision-making body for the first time on Thursday.

Israel has been urged by members of the Western alliance to adopt a stronger stance against Russia in response to the conflict in Ukraine.

However, Israel has declined to provide Kiev with weapons out of concern for upsetting Moscow, which is important to its neighbor Syria.
