Algerian state television confirmed late Friday evening that Abdelaziz Bouteflika, the country’s former president, has died at the age of 84, after a statement from the presidency.
From 1999 until his resignation in 2019, he was president for nearly two decades. He was Algeria’s longest-serving head of state.
All but one of his four political triumphs were tainted by widespread fraud and irregularities.
Bouteflika suffered a stroke in 2013 and was rarely seen in public afterward, leading to years of uncertainty about his health.
