German rescue planes hampered from Kabul landing

During tumultuous conditions on the ground, two German military planes were blocked from landing at Kabul’s main airport.

On Monday afternoon, one of the A400M turboprop aircraft travelled to Kabul but was unable to land due to civilians on the airstrip.

It was one of two planes that had been stranded following a refuelling stop in Baku, Azerbaijan. The jet was obliged to fly to Tashkent, Uzbekistan’s capital, to refuel after maintaining a holding pattern.

Another aircraft had been assigned to maintain the possible landing slot, according to the German air force.

“At the moment, no aeroplane movements are possible there since there are a huge number of desperate individuals on the tarmac,” Germany’s Foreign Ministry stated of Kabul airport.
