Bangladesh is launching major Covid-19 vaccine campaign

The government of Bangladesh’s aim to vaccinate 10 million people in a week focuses mostly on those living in union and ward levels.

The administration resolved last week at an inter-ministerial meeting to begin walk-in vaccines for residents in rural areas on August 7.

Vaccination centres in state-run hospitals in upazila towns and municipal corporation regions, on the other hand, will not allow anyone to get the vaccine without first registering online.

The health service unit that is administering the extended vaccination campaign, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), will only administer immunizations three days a week. Depending on the situation, they can extend it by a day.

Given that the drive is held four days a week, officials will have to distribute 2.5 million shots per day to inoculate 10 million individuals in a week.

According to Dr Md Sheikh Abu Shahin, civil surgeon of Jessore, no walk-in facility will be offered at regular centres in upazila health complexes or city corporation regions.

He noted that at the grassroots level, each centre will have three booths for people, while in municipality regions, each ward will have a single booth.

Minister of Health Zahid Maleque said the first 10 million doses of vaccination would be given out in a festive spirit across the country from August 7 to 14. “The elderly would be given first priority.”

According to the DGHS, citizens at the grassroots level will receive the Sinopharm vaccination, while city corporation residents will receive the Moderna vaccine. From Monday, the second dose of Oxford-AstraZeneca would be administered across the country.
