WHO urges action to suppress COVID before deadlier variants emerge

The United Nations Health Organization has repeatedly called for vaccines to be provided equally over the world, calling the current disparity a “moral outrage.”

The WHO warned Friday that the Delta strain of Covid-19 is a warning to the rest of the world to suppress the virus rapidly before it mutates into something even worse.

According to the World Health Organization, the highly transmissible strain, which was first discovered in India, has now spread to 132 countries and territories.

“Delta is a caution: it’s a signal that the virus is evolving, but it’s also a call to action that we need to act now before more deadly variations arise,” said Michael Ryan, the WHO’s head of emergencies.

“So far, four variations of concern have appeared — and there will be more as long as the virus continues to spread,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.

In five of the six WHO areas, infections have surged by 80 percent on average in the last four weeks, according to Tedros.

Despite the fact that Delta has shook several countries, Ryan stated that tried-and-true methods for controlling transmission, including as physical separation, masks, hand hygiene, and avoiding lengthy periods inside in poorly ventilated, congested areas, still worked.

“They’re putting a halt to the Delta strain, especially through vaccination,” he said.

“The virus has improved its fitness and speed. The game plan still works, but we need to put it into action and execute it much more efficiently and successfully than we have in the past.”
