First Covid cases in Tokyo Olympics athletes’ village

Meanwhile, Team GB’s athletics team has begun training after six athletes and two staff members were forced to self-isolate after being identified as close connections with a fellow passenger on their inbound journey to Japan.

During their time in isolation, all of the athletes produced several negative PCR readings.

Thabiso Monyane and Kamohelo Mahlatsi have been confirmed as positive cases by the South African Football Association.

Mario Masha, the video analyst for the South African football squad, also tested positive on Saturday.

Close contacts have been identified as 21 South African players and officials, according to the organizers.

They are restricted to their Olympic village rooms, where they must take daily PCR tests and have all of their food delivered to their door.

The squad will be permitted to train in a bubble as they prepare for their encounter against Japan on Thursday as long as all of the results on Sunday are bad.
