UN calls on US to lift sanctions on Iran

UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacekeeping Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo on Wednesday called for the lifting or waiver of sanctions imposed by the United States on the Iran Nuclear Agreement, or Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). News from Xinhua.

Speaking at a briefing on the implementation of Security Council Resolution 2231, DiCarlo said, “I reiterate the Secretary-General’s call for the expansion of oil trade with the Islamic Republic of Iran and the lifting of US sanctions on the plan to facilitate nuclear activities.”

On July 20, 2015, Security Council Resolution 2231 endorsed Iran’s nuclear program, the JCPOA. The Security Council initiated an inspection process and proposed preparations for the lifting of UN sanctions against Iran.

The Security Council approved the resolution in consultation with 15 member states: China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, the European Union and Iran. However, on May 8, 2016, the United States announced the withdrawal of the Iran deal.

DiCarlo called on Iran to immediately resume talks with the International Atomic Energy Agency. He said considerable progress has been made in the implementation of JCPOA and Resolution 2231.
