3.3 million doses of COVID vaccine will arrive from US and China

In addition, the second consignment of 1.2 million more Moderns vaccine jabs are expected to arrive in Bangladesh on Saturday

Dhaka is expecting to receive 1.3 million Moderna vaccine doses from the US, under the Covax scheme, and a shipment of 2 million Sinopharm vaccines from China, on Friday.

Furthermore, the second consignment of 1.2 million Moderns doses are expected to arrive on Saturday, Foreign Minister Abdul Momen said on Friday.

With that, the government would have 4.5 million vaccine doses at its disposal.

“We are on the right path. Hopefully, we can recover from the vaccine crisis,” Momen told Bangla Tribune.

“We made an effort and as a result of that, we are getting vaccines under the Covax program. We are also taking vaccines from China,” he added.

The flight ferrying the Moderna vaccine doses from the US is expected to land around 11pm and the one from China is scheduled to land around 12am. The flight carrying the second consignment is expected to land on 8am Saturday.

Foreign minister, health minister, health division secretary, foreign secretary, along with the ambassadors of the respective countries are expected to be present at the Hazrat Shahjahal International Airport in Dhaka to collect the vaccines.

Bangladesh has been facing a vaccine crisis ever since the Serum Institute of India went back on its deal to provide 30 million Oxford-AstraZeneca doses to Bangladesh.
