In Cuba, Raul Castro is replaced by Diaz Canel

Diaz Canel is the leader of the Cuban Communist Party. Miguel Diaz is loyal to Canel Castro.

In 2016, Raul Castro handed over the presidency to 60-year-old Miguel Diaz Canel. Miguel led the party in two provinces before leading the national government.

On Friday (April 18), Raul Castro announced his resignation from the leadership of the Cuban Communist Party. In a speech, Raul said he hoped the new leadership would lead the party in an anti-imperialist spirit and remain loyal to the party’s ideology. Diaz Canel is almost 30 years younger than Raul Castro.

Fidel Castro has led Cuba since 1959. In 2006 he fell ill. Two years later, he officially handed over power to his brother. Fidel Castro died in 2016. Miguel Diaz Canel was born after the Cuban Revolution. He is a staunch supporter of Castro.

Diaz Canel began his political career in the early twentieth century. In 2009, Diaz Canel became Minister of Education. In 2013, he became vice president. In 2016, he was elected President of Cuba in the Cuban National Assembly with 99.63 percent of the vote.
