NYPD officer arrested on suspicion of spying for China

An official from the New York City Police Department has been charged with illegally spying for China.

Baimadage Angwang, who was born in Tibet, has been accused of smuggling information about the activities of Chinese nationals in New York. He also worked to identify potential individuals in the Tibetan community who could secretly provide information.

The officer was arrested on Tuesday. He served in the Community Affairs Unit of the New York Police. If convicted, he could face up to 55 years in prison.

According to prosecutors, Diele Angwang is a member of the U.S. Reserve Army in addition to the police. He worked there as a civil affairs specialist.

He is accused of having contacts with two Chinese consulate officials.
