17 people died while visiting Hawor in Bangladesh

At least 17 passengers were killed when a trawler sank at Rajalikanda Hawor in Madan Upazila of Netrokona in Bangladesh on Wednesday afternoon. Two more are missing.

The bodies were identified as teachers and students of a madrasa in Charsirta Union of Mymensingh Sadar Upazila. They went to visit Hawor.

According to some residents of the area and sources in the upazila administration, the teachers and students of the madrasa went on a trip to Haor in Madan’s Uchitpur area around one o’clock this afternoon. They were going from Uchitpur to Gobindshree in a trawler. At that time, the trawler sank in the Rajalikanda area due to strong waves. At first, the locals carried out the rescue operation. Later, local fire service and police members took part in the rescue operation.

Madan Upazila Nirbahi Officer Bulbul Ahmed Talukder said from the spot at 3 pm, 17 bodies have been recovered so far. Two are missing. Their names are not yet known. He added that there were 48 passengers in the trawler.
