Turkey to take Rohingya issue to UN Security Council

Turkey has reassured Bangladesh of raising the Rohingya issue at the next meeting of the UN Security Council (UNSC) as the Rohingya problem is still unsure of putting much burden on Bangladesh.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu assured during a telephone conversation with Bangladesh Foreign MinisterDr AK Abdul Momen on Saturday.

Mevlut Cavusoglu also assured Bangladesh of extending all necessary assistance to repatriate the Rohingyas to their place of origin in Rakhine State who are currently living in Cox’s Bazar.

Bangladesh is hosting over 1.1 million Rohingyas, most of them enrolled in Bangladesh since August 25, 2017.

Dr Momen asked the Turkish Foreign Minister to establish a virtual session at Director-General level before the next D-8 Summit reflecting the current condition.

Momenalso proposed to creating a working group of D-8 to strengthen economic cooperation in post-coronavirus period. The Turkish Foreign Minister agreed on the ideas shared by the Bangladesh Foreign Minister. Turkey is now the chair of the D-8 or Developing-8.
