HALOW+ extends support to people affected by COVID-19 in Gazipur, Bangladesh

With funding from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and partnership with Marks & Spencer (M&S); CARE Bangladesh’s Health Access and Linkage Opportunities for Workers Plus (HALOW+) project has been working with Gazipur City Corporation, the office of civil surgeon and DD- Family Planning in Gazipur to assist fight COVID-19

As a part of the fighting during this critical situation by extending support for frontline & field level health workers and community people, HALOW+ project distributed 450 pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE) along with 450 pieces Eye shields, 400 boxes disposable mask and hand gloves, 400 liters hand sanitizer, 520 liters liquid soap, 2500 bottles hand rub, 10000 soaps and 155 disinfectant spray machines to Gazipur City Corporation, Health and Family Planning Department of Gazipur district along with Savar and Valuka Upazila Health Complex.

There was a simple handover ceremony session organized on 23rd April where honorable Mayor Alhaj Advocate Jahangir Alam City Corporation, Gazipur was present as Chief Guest. Shamsunnahar Bhuiyan MP, Member, Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Labour and Employment was present as guest of honour. Former Mayor of Tongi Pouroshava Advocate Azmat Ullah Khan and Senior Social Compliance Manager of M&S Mizanur Rahman also spoke on the occasion as special guests.

HALOW+

Walter Mwasaa, Country Director and Dr. Jahirul Alam Azad Head of Urban Health along with other project staff members were present from CARE Bangladesh on the event. Walter thanked both elected representatives of Gazipur City Corporation and local health officials for the collaborative efforts while recognizing support extended by GSK and M&S in combatting health crisis because of COVID-19. 

From 8th March, HALOW+ project reached nearly 50,000 RMG workers and 100,000 community people through Special community committee formation, COVID -19 Awareness message sharing, Demonstration of Hand wash, facilitation of customized home based handwashing option and distribution of 120 pieces PPE,1000 boxes disposable mask and hand gloves, 200 liters hand sanitizer, 200 liters liquid soap, 10000 pieces soaps, 500 bottles hand rubs and 120 disinfectant spray machines to City Corporation and Health department of Gazipur. 

Mehrab Masayeed Habib studied Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) at American International University Bangladesh (AIUB). Currently, he is working for News Hour. He is passionate about automobiles. He is also the founder & trainer of Bangla Automobile School. He conducts workshops on automobile engineering at local level.
