Today is World Autism Awareness Day

The 12th World Autism Awareness Day will be observed in all over the globe today with a renewed pledge to bring the people suffering from Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (NDDs) into the mainstream of development.

The theme of this year’s Autism Awareness Day is ‘Assistive Technologies, Active Participation’. World Autism Awareness Day will be observed in Bangladesh as well. The rate of autism in all regions of the world is high and the lack of understanding has a tremendous impact on the individuals, their families and communities. Increasing understanding and awareness for ASD is important.

The Ministry of Social Welfare, Social Welfare Department, National Disability Development Foundation, National Disability Forum and different socio-cultural bodies and non-government organizations have chalked out elaborate programmes to observe the day in a befitting manner.

The United Nations General Assembly unanimously declared April 2 as the World Autism Awareness Day to highlight the needs for helping improve the lives of children and adults who suffer from the disorder.

Many individuals with ASD experience significant challenges in adapting to their environment, the better understanding of those specific factors can promote resilience and positive development with individuals and families who have ASD.

Creating awareness for ASD is a great way to share in World Autism Awareness Day.
