In FY18, Bangladesh earned Tk4,500 crore by exporting around 69,000 metric tons of fish and fish products
Bangladesh has ranked third in the world in terms of inland fish production in 2018, according to a report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
After ranking fifth last year, the country now only trails behind China and India, ranked first and second, respectively.
The information was disclosed by Fisheries and Livestock Minister Narayon Chandra Chanda at a press briefing at the Secretariat on Wednesday, reports UNB.
The press briefing was organized on the occasion of National Fisheries Week-2018, which will end on July 24. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the week from her official Ganabhaban residence on Thursday.
Citing records of the Bangladesh Economic Review, the Fisheries and Livestock minister said the fisheries sector contributed 3.57 percent to the national GDP in FY18.
In FY18, Bangladesh earned Tk4,500 crore by exporting around 69,000 metric tons of fish and fish products, the minister said, adding that the average per capita fish consumption in the country is 62.58 grams per day, against the daily requirement of 60 grams.
Narayon Chandra also said the survey vessel, RV Meen Sandhani, has already identified 298 species of fish and 23 species of shrimp within Bangladesh’s maritime boundary.
