Suspect arrested in Dhaka killed in Mymensingh ‘shootout’

A suspect in five cases has been killed in an alleged shootout involving police in Mymensingh after he was arrested in Dhaka.
The deceased has been identified as Sarfan Islam aka Babu, 28.

Police had taken Babu along on a raid in Mymensingh’s Tinkona Pukur area when the gunfight broke out, said district Detective Branch OC Ashiqur Rahman.

“He was one of the suspects in the murder of Pew Babu in Mymensingh and the murder of Sundori Arman. He was accused in a total of five cases.”

Sarfan Islam Babu was arrested in Dhaka on Monday under the supervision of Police Outpost-2 Inspector Sajeeb Ahamed.

Police then took him on a raid to arrest ‘the other absconding suspects’.

“When the police team reached the area one of the absconding suspects, Rajib, and eight to ten others attacked police. Police returned fire in self-defence. Sarfan Babu attempted to flee and was shot,” said OC Rahman.

Babu was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead, the OC said.

Constable Shafiqul Islam and Police Outpost-2 Constable Anisur Rahman were also injured in the incident, he added.
