President administers Syed Mahmud Hossain’s oath as chief justice of Bangladesh

President M Abdul Hamid yesterday administered the oath of office of Syed Mahmud Hossain as the new chief justice a day after signing his appointment.

The president administered the oath at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban in a brief ceremony, witnessed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her cabinet colleagues and advisors, the parliamentary chief whip, Supreme Court judges, attorney general, former chief justices.

Hossain, a senior judge of the apex court was appointed as the chief justice yesterday three months after Surendra Kumar Sinha resigned amid allegations of “grave” graft and moral lapses.

The Chief Election Commissioner, chiefs of the three armed services, senior civil officers and senior lawyers attended the ceremony conducted by Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam.
