Biman Bangladesh Airlines made Tk151cr profits

Biman Bangladesh Airlines, the national flag carrier, made profits in the third consecutive fiscal as it registered a gross profit of Taka 151 crore in fiscal 2016-17 (FY17).

After clearing deferred tax, the net profit stood at Taka 47 crore, said a Biman press release. According to Biman, the state-run carrier earned a profit of Taka 276 crore in fiscal 2015-16 (FY16) and Taka 324 crore in fiscal 2014-15 (FY15).

The Board of Directors of Biman Bangladesh Airlines approved the Biman’s financial statement for FY17 in its 10th Annual General Meeting with its chairman Air Marshal Muhammad Enamul Bari (retd.) in the chair, reports BSS.

Besides, earning profits for FY17, Biman contributed Taka 381 crore tax to the national exchequer. During the FY16, Biman ferried a total of 23 lakh 51 thousand passengers which was 23 lakh 18 thousand in FY16.

Besides, Biman shipped 33, 542 tonnes of cargo in FY17 whereas it carried 40,931 tonnes of cargo in FY16. Shipment of cargo witnessed an 18 percent fall in FY17 due mainly to the temporary ban on direct freight to London.

Biman is now running its operation with 10 wide-body and 2 narrow-body updated and advanced aircraft to 15 international and 7 domestic destinations. Four modern Boeing 787-8 dream-lines are expected to join the Biman’s fleet in 2018 and 2019.
