News Hour:

Fortune noted that 22% of Bangladeshi adults use bKash with roughly 4.5 million transactions happening on a daily basis.

Fortune magazine, in its annual list of companies that are changing the world for the better, has listed bKash – a Bangladeshi mobile-based payment system, reports Dhaka Tribune.

The list, titled Change the World 2017, includes 50 private companies whose products and services have had a positive impact on people’s lives.

bKash, in its six years of operation, has helped hundreds of thousands of people use financial services like a bank’s but with less formalities. bKash users are able to deposit money, and easily transfer it with the aid of licensed bKash agents nationwide. The mobile financial service has also doubled as a payment medium for many services, further surpassing its perceived usage.

Because of its innovative nature, and widespread usage, bKash has bagged many accolades over the years. The inclusion in the Fortune Change the World 2017 is just the latest. The list is topped by banking giant JP Morgan Chase and followed by DSM – a Dutch company which aims to reduce methane emissions from cows – and Apple.

It is of note that most of the entries in the list are global or regional ventures. Yet, bKash stands out with its operations in Bangladesh alone.
