Manu Mia married Roksana, the only daughter of Rafiqul Islam from Panbazar village, about a year ago taking a dowry of Tk1 lakh.
Husband and in-laws have brutally tortured a housewife and cut off her hair over dowry in Rangpur’s Sadar upazila.
The 22-year-old victim Roksana Begum was admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital in a critical condition following the torture on Friday night.
Police arrested her husband Monu Mia on Sunday night, Rangpur’s Kotwali police station OC ABM Jahidul Islam told Dhaka Tribune.
According to the victim’s family, Manu Mia married Roksana, the only daughter of Rafiqul Islam from Panbazar village, about a year ago taking a dowry of Tk1 lakh from her parents.
But Monu asked for another Tk1 lakh from his in-laws within a few months of their marriage and started torturing her wife when they refused.
Victim’s father, considering the future of his only daughter, arranged Tk50,000 more for Roksana’s husband by selling some property.
But he started demanding the rest of the money only within two months.
When Manu Mia and his family realised that Roksana’s family will not be able to provide the rest of the money, they led a brutal attack on her on Friday night.
Police arrested Manu Mia from his home following a complaint filed by victim’s father with Kotwali police station under Women and Child Repression Prevention Act. The rest of his family is on the run.
