Promethean Power Systems partners with USAID-backed program to help Bangladeshi dairy farmers

News Hour:

Promethean Power Systems announced today that it has been chosen as a partner for Feed the Future Partnering for Innovation, a prestigious program funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This partnership is to help commercialize agricultural innovations and build profitable, sustainable businesses that support smallholder farmers of Bangladesh as well as across the globe.

Promethean was selected as a partner in Bangladesh after a rigorous screening process that evaluated more than 100 potential partnerships from across the world. The selection was based on a comprehensive set of criteria centered on identifying and commercializing agricultural technologies that can curb postharvest losses and sustainably improve farmer incomes.

The partnership will enable Promethean Power Systems to provide thousands of smallholder farmers in Bangladesh access to the dairy cold chain. To accomplish this, Promethean will introduce and market its patented thermal-energy storage milk chillers to dairy processors who procure milk from smallholder farmers scattered across rural Bangladesh. This will not only help dairy farmers grow their income but also consequently encourage them to increase daily milk production volumes.

Promethean Power Systems specializes in cold chain solutions for some of the world’s most challenging conditions such as erratic electricity and poor road connectivity.  The company has already developed a strong presence in India and is tapping opportunities in the dairy sectors in other South East Asian and African countries. Promethean Power Systems has a research center in Boston, USA, and a design and manufacturing facility in Pune, India.

The company’s chilling solutions are delivered through an innovative thermal energy storage technology that has eliminated diesel generators for village-level chilling in hundreds of villages across India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.

“We are honored to sign a partnership with Partnering for Innovation as it provides a substantial improvement to Promethean’s expansion plans in Bangladesh. By establishing a dedicated team on the ground in Bangladesh, we look forward to giving dairy processors a more effective and profitable way to expand quality milk procurement. The timely chilling of raw milk to recommended temperatures brings a remarkable reduction in spoilage and improvement in quality.  We are incredibly excited about improving profitability for dairy processors and farmers in Bangladesh,” said Jofi Joseph, Director – Sales & Marketing, Promethean Power Systems.

The partnership will enable Promethean to develop strategic relationships with dairy processors in Bangladesh, conduct pilot projects to optimize chilling solutions at village-level milk collection centers, and scale operations and impact in Bangladesh.
