Trump Cafe: Make Dhaka’s Cafe great again!

News Hour:

US President Donald Trump’s fanbase in Dhaka now has an official hangout spot, a restaurant in Dhaka which has been named Trump Café in his honour.

Founded by Saiful Islam, a diehard Trump fan, the restaurant is located at the Jigatola intersection on Sat Masjid Road.

The ‘Trump Cafe’ offers Chinese, Indian and Thai cuisine and other fast food items on its menu. Founded by Saiful Islam, a diehard Trump fan, the restaurant is located at the Jigatola intersection on Sat Masjid Road.

“I did not start the business with any specific thought in mind, just the fact that I am a big fan of US President Donald Trump,” said Saiful, who, in spite of having a degree in mathematics, decided to start up a cafe business because of his deeprooted love for Trump.

Along with other regular favourites, the cafe also serves some food items inspired by Trump such as the special Trump Cocktail or the Green Apple Mocktail.

“My uncle, Kabir Ali, is the manager at a Trump owned restaurant in the US. It was initially his idea to start a restaurant, and since I am a big fan as well, I wanted to get involved in the venture. My uncle is financing the restaurant and I have a share in it,” said Saiful.

Even though Trump remains unaware about the existence of the restaurant and bears no connection to it, Saiful is happy to be a part of the restaurant named after the US president.

“Many people think he is a joke, but he is an inspiration for me. If you look at his business ventures, you will see that he is quite succesful and shrewd at doing business. That is what inspires me,” Saiful told the Dhaka Tribune.

One of the attractions of the cafe is a Trump cutout that people can take pictures with.

Nazmun Nahar, who was having lunch with her family there, told this correspondent: “The food is average, but the idea is quite interesting.

There is a Trump cutout in front of the cafe, which is quite funny and unique.”

The cafe offers a 10% discount for students with valid student IDs. It usually draws in 200 people daily, but restaurant personnel say the number doubles on holidays.

Even the cafe’s wifi password is named after a Trump family member.

One of the café employees, Fahim Rahman, said: “Our owner is a big supporter of the US president, so we offer several items, including drinks, that are named after him.”

When this Dhaka Tribune correspondent spoke with another group who were eating at the café, Rony Haldar, a private university student, said: “I was told about the cafe by a friend, so now I am here with my group. One of the main attractions of this café is that the prices are comparatively lower than at other places in the Dhanmondi area.”

A soft inaugration for the café took place on Januray 17. The owners are planning a grand opening within the next two months.
