Grand Master Zia becomes unbeaten champion in Language Day chess

GM Ziaur Rahman of Sheikh Russel Memorial Sporting Club lived to the top billing as he emerged unbeaten champion in the International Mother Language Day International Rating Chess Tournament held at Sonargaon Upazilla Parishad Auditorium.

This meet was sponsored by Honorable Member of Bangladesh Parliament Narayangaj-3 Mr. Liakot Hossain Khoka MP and Upazela Parishad of Sonargaon, and organised by Sonargaon Chess Club under the guidance of Bangladesh Chess Federation.

While on the way to the final Zia accumulated 8.5 points out of 9 games to clinch the title. Three players earned 7.5 points each.

In tie-breaking system FM Syed Mahfuzur Rahma of Janata Bank Officers Welfare Society became runner-up, FM Mehdi Hasan Parag of of Sheikh Russel Memorial Sporting Club became 3rd and CM Nikhil Magizhnan of India 4th.

Four players became 5th to 8th with 7 points each. They are: Md. Jamal Uddin of Sheikh Russel Chess Club, FM Mohamman Fahad Rahman of Access Chess Club, Gias Uddin Mithu of Agrani Bank Daba Dal and Md. Abu Hanif of Sonali Bank Sports & Recreation Club.

Mohammad Omar Faruk became 1st and Binod Das became 2nd among players from Sonargaon with 5 points each. The prize-distribution ceremony was held yesterday after last round games.

Mrs. Dalia Liakot wife of Honorable Member of Bangladesh Parliament Narayangaj-3 Mr. Liakot Hossain Khoka distributed prizes among the winners to present as chief guest.

A total of 162 players from Bangladesh and India took part in this meet. This competition was held in 9 round Swiss-League for 5 days. Two lac taka cash prizes were given to the winners.
