Collective efforts needed to deepen economic cooperation between Bangladesh and Myanmar

Bangladesh-Myanmar Business Promotion Council (BMBPC) organized a reception at a City Hotel on last Thursday in honor of visiting Myanmar delegation led by H.E. Mr. Toe Aung Myint, Permanent Secretary, ministry of Commerce of Myanmar to the 8th Bangladesh-Myanmar Joint Trade Commission meeting held in Dhaka held from November 09-10, 2016.

In his welcome remarks, the Chairman of BMBPC Syed Mahmudul Huq said “our two countries are not only close neighbors; but also countries with so many shared interests and stakes. Bangladesh and Myanmar do not suffer from the burden of asymmetrical economic relations and any negatives.”

“On the contrary, both of our countries have almost identical economic challenges and a long history of collaboration on myriad economic issues. We have also good potentials of enriching the contents of our cooperation and widening the scope of collective initiatives to elevate our cooperative relations to new heights.”

In this connection, he mentioned that Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation and Myanmar Shrimp Association signed a MoU in June this year to work together to develop and adapt the hatchery technology in shrimp and prawn sectors of both the countries. He also mentioned that there is an enormous scope of cooperation between Bangladesh and Myanmar in agriculture, energy and service sectors including in the Banking sector.

He also proposed to set up Special Economic Zones in Cox’s Bazar and Bandarban districts dedicated to joint ventures between Bangladesh and Myanmar, especially in the field of agro-based industries with inputs/ raw materials from Myanmar for their re-export to third countries.

The Permanent Secretary H.E. Mr. Toe Aung Myint in his response assured all out support of the Government of Myanmar to the enhancement of both the countries.

The reception was attended, among others, by Senior Secretary, ministry of Industries, Mosharraf Hossain Bhuyan, Commerce Secretary Hedayetullah Al Mamoon, Chairman of National Board of Revenue Nojibur Rahman, Planning Commission Member Khorshed Alam Chowdhury, Myanmar Ambassador Myo Myint Than, Singapore Consul Darryl Lau, President of International Chamber of Commerce-Bangladesh Mahbubur Rahman,  President of Bangladesh Employer’s Federation Salauddin Kasem Khan and President of Cox’s Bazar Chamber of Chamber of Commerce and Industries Abu Murshed Chowdhury.
