Hong Kong got surprises by Thailand in women’s Asia qualifier

Thailand defeated host Hong Kong by 17 runs on day three of the ICC Women’s World Cup Asia Qualifier 2016 at the Mission Road Ground, Monk Kok on Tuesday. The victory helped Thailand maintain its unbeaten record in the four-team double-league contest, while it was Hong Kong’s first defeat in three matches.

In the other match of the day, Nepal notched up its first win of the tournament when it defeated China by 20 runs. China is still searching for its maiden win after three matches.

In the feature match of the day, Thailand, electing to bat first, scored 90 for six in the allotted 20 overs – thanks to a 63-run sixth-wicket partnership between captain Sornnarin Tippoch and Naruemol Chaiwai. The two batters had joined hands in the seventh over with the scoreboard showing 17 for four.

Tippoch, who played in the 2014 Asian Games as well as in the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier in Ireland, top scored with a 52-ball 36 that included five fours, while Chaiwai contributed a 29-ball 20.

In turn, Hong Kong finished at 73 for eight with Chanida Sutthiruang claiming three for 13 and Nattaya Boochatham bagging two for 17.

Wednesday is a rest day in the tournament. The top side from this competition will qualify for the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier 2017, which will be staged in February/March.
