Men prevent violence against women in refugee camps

News Hour:

Groups of men in Rwandan refugee camps are taking the lead to prevent abuse against women and girls thanks to training provided by Plan International.

Since 2014, we have been serving as UNHCR’s sole protection partner in all 5 refugee camps in Rwanda and in Kigali for urban refugees.

In Mugombwa refugee camp, home to over 8,000 refugees from the Democratic of Congo, we train men’s groups so they can promote peaceful resolutions to domestic disputes.

The men’s group has 30 members divided into 7 groups, one for each section of the camp. Each group reaches out to the people to ensure household conflict is discussed and addressed. Peaceful and regular dialogue is the main approach used to help settle disputes.
