Want to change the world? Do this ONE thing on social media

News Hour:

Facebook, Skype, Twitter and Instagram have completely transformed interpersonal communication. People can now talk instantly with loved ones in other countries by a simple push of a button. Teenagers constantly converse with multiple friends via text. And social media users are able to share the most exciting thoughts and events through photos and other postings.

Social media is meant to bring people together through the sharing of great moments and memories. But, unfortunately, that is not always how the media is used.

I’m positive we have all witnessed endless Facebook and Twitter feuds about who is right and who is wrong regarding numerous topics. The internet has become a place where stating your beliefs can backfire as soon as you click “post.” Social media has become a place for resentful people to start endless feuds with others, reports FamilyShare.

The amount of cruelty and accusations floating on multiple social media sites has transformed what was once a haven to connect with friends and family into a toxic battlefield.

While there is no possible way for every person in the world to agree on one opinion, why do different views on subjects have to end in war? At times, swords are sharpened and knives are thrown only minutes after the first comment is made.
Whatever your beliefs may be in regards to the most debated subjects, there is a solution to end the senseless, cruel and fire-fueled arguments: Kindness.

Kindness is the key to unlocking the door to peace. The world could use an extra dash of kindness and compassion in every corner.

Although kindness and consideration may seem futile in the middle of a senseless argument, we forget that the smallest act of selflessness and respect can touch even the most spiteful heart.

Whether you are Christian, hold other religious beliefs or are not affiliated with religion at all, kindness is the answer. Be respectful. Be smart with your words. Think before you respond with anger and fierce defense.

Just because someone does not share your beliefs, does not mean they are unworthy of your respect and kindness. Most often, those who are cruel on social media have nothing better to do than light endless fires from the safety of their own homes. Despite your own beliefs, be generous when no one else will. Kill them with kindness.

There are ways to defend your beliefs respectfully. Stand up for your beliefs, but also stand up for people who oppose you. All are entitled to their own opinions, and no one deserves disrespect and hate because of what they believe.

How different would the world be if everyone could share their thoughts and not be reprimanded for sharing them? Cruel remarks only lead to anger and become extra coals to fuel the fire.

Instead of being quick to anger when those around you oppose you, consider reacting with patience, kindness and understanding. Compassion leaves a deeper impression on others than cruelty. Kindness is the calm after the storm. It can truly change people, including you.

It is far more important to be kind and respectful than to be right. Through compassion and respect, social media can achieve its original purpose: to bring people together.

Be an example of kindness even if everyone is against you. Your actions will shed positive light on the face of social media. Be the change the world needs.
