The United Nations has bestowed the ‘Dag Hammarskj”ld Medal’ on five fallen Bangladeshi peacekeepers in recognition of their extraordinary sacrifice in UN peacekeeping operations.
According to a press release received today by the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations in New York, the award was presented on Thursday at the General Assembly Hall by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a ceremony to honor 103 peacekeepers from 39 countries who died in the line of duty in 2022.
The prizes were accepted on behalf of their respective countries by their respective Permanent Representatives, according to the statement.
Ambassador Muhammad Abdul Muhith, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, accepted the medals on behalf of Bangladesh’s fallen troops.
The five Bangladeshi fallen peacekeepers are: Sergeant Md Manjur Rahman (was serving in UNISFA, Abyei), Lance Corporal Kafil Majumder (was serving in UNMISS, South Sudan), Sainik Md Sharif Hossain (was serving in MUNISCA, Central African Republic), Sainik Md Jahangir Alam (was serving in MINUSCA, Central African Republic) and Sainik Md Jasim Uddin (was serving in MINUSCA, Central African Republic).
Following his receipt of the Medal, Ambassador Muhith signed the condolence book kept at the General Assembly Hall on this occasion, expressing his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased peacekeepers.
Bangladesh is currently the leading supplier of uniformed people to UN peacekeeping operations, according to the announcement.
Approximately 7,500 Bangladeshi peacekeepers are now serving in nine peacekeeping missions.
So date, 166 Bangladeshi troops have died while serving in UN peacekeeping operations.
