The government of the Indian state of Meghalaya has expressed a desire to strengthen economic and trade connections with Bangladesh in order to benefit their people.
Conrad Sangma, Chief Minister of India’s northeastern Meghalaya state, showed his interest on Wednesday when Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Mustafizur Rahman paid him a visit at his office in Meghalaya.
According to Bangladesh High Commission sources, the chief minister briefed the ambassador on the chances and possibilities for increasing Bangladesh trade and commerce in the state of Meghalaya.
He emphasized the possibilities of direct imports of Bangladeshi clothing, plastic products, electronic products, processed food, and frozen food.
The chief minister also emphasized the importance of mutual partnership in the global value chain and product diversification. He requested Bangladesh’s assistance in establishing and growing Meghalaya’s tourism industry.
The Bangladesh envoy emphasized the importance of improving connection with the state and strengthening people-to-people interactions, referring to Bangladesh’s historical link with Meghalaya.
He said that the governments of Bangladesh and India are working to promote connectivity with the North-eastern states by road, rail and river.
He added that Meghalayan investors have abundant potential to participate in many sectors of Bangladesh, highlighting the existing government’s willingness to strengthen commercial connections with the north-eastern section of India.
He brought the chief minister’s attention to the urgent reopening of closed land customs stations in border areas.
Earlier, the Bangladesh high commissioner met with the Assam Industries and Trade Fair Association in Guwahati.
During the formal tour, he will visit numerous land customs stations along the border and meet with business leaders and trade representatives in Dawki and Tamabil, Meghalaya, according to sources.
