Invasion damages $2.6 bn worth of Ukraine’s heritage, culture: UN

According to a United Nations organization, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has caused $2.6 billion in damage to the country’s heritage and cultural sites.

Culture, tourism, sports, and entertainment have lost a total of $15.1 billion in income since the Russian invasion in February 2022, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

According to the report, nearly 250 monuments have been damaged or obliterated, mostly in the country’s east.

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, who toured Ukraine on Monday, estimated that $6.9 billion would be required to repair the damage and re-establish the sectors.

“We will help the Ukrainian authorities draw up a national reconstruction plan for the culture sector,” she said.
