Russia adopts new anti-west global strategy

A new Russian foreign policy initiative sanctioned by President Vladimir Putin on Friday aims to limit Western “dominance” and names China and India as important potential allies.

The new paper solidifies the severe Cold War-style rift over Moscow’s offensive in Ukraine between Russia and the West.

“The Russian Federation intends to give priority to the elimination of vestiges of the dominance of the United States and other unfriendly countries in world politics,” the strategy document said.

Russia refers to nations, especially those in Europe and North America, that have criticized Moscow’s military campaign in Ukraine and enacted sanctions as “unfriendly countries.”

Russia pledged to “create the conditions for any state to reject neo-colonialist and hegemonic aims,” according to the 42-page document posted on the Kremlin’s website.

When announcing the document at a security council meeting, Putin claimed that “radical changes” in the world necessitated updates to Russia’s approach to involvement on the international stage.

The strategy, which was also evident in the Russian president’s state of the nation address from last month, represents his increasingly anti-Western stance in response to sanctions and Western military assistance to Ukraine.

Russia has tried to strengthen political and economic ties with nations in Africa and Asia like China and India that have taken a more tolerant stance towards its offensive in Ukraine as a result of its growing isolation on the international arena.
