Shakib stars as Bangladesh avoid ODI series sweep

At the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium today, Shakib Al Hasan put on an incredible all-around performance as Bangladesh defeated England by 50 runs in the third and final ODI to escape a series sweep.

The star all-arounder backed up his 71 ball-75 with a 4-35, becoming the first Bangladeshi bowler to record 300 wickets while also sparing Bangladesh’s face after it appeared that they were headed for their first home series sweep since 2012.

Together with Najmul Hossain Shanto’s 53 runs and Mushfiqur Rahim’s 70, they helped Bangladesh reach 246 before being bowled out in 48.5 overs.

Under constant duress from spinners, led by Shakib, England’s highly regarded batting lineup collapsed and was finished off for 196 in 43.1 overs.

The only two players changed for Bangladesh for this game were left-arm spinner Taijul Islam (2-52) and quick bowler Ebadot Hossain (2-38), who each took two wickets to support Shakib.

In the end, England won the three-match series 2-1 by winning the first game by three wickets and the second one by 132 runs.
