Guterres reaffirms UN’s support to Bangladesh

António Guterres, secretary-general of the United Nations (SG), has reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to continuing to assist Bangladesh in overcoming any obstacles that may result from ongoing international disputes and the unfavorable effects of climate change.

According to a press release issued here today, he made this promise while speaking with Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen on Friday at the U.N. headquarters in New York.

The SG advised that some European nations, specifically Latvia, Estonia, Belgium, and the Netherlands, have sufficient stocks of fertilizer raw materials that Bangladesh may contemplate importing at a reasonable price.

The foreign minister thanked the secretary-general and promised that Bangladesh would look into the prospect of taking advantage of this chance.

Momen praised the Black Sea Grain initiative, which assisted developing nations in importing cereal and fertilizer to address their food problem.

Guterres praised Bangladesh’s remarkable development trajectory under the inspirational guidance of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and expressed his hope that Bangladesh would continue to experience success in the years to come, particularly in achieving the SDGs.

He also admired the continuous leadership of Bangladesh in maintaining international peace and security as the top troops and police contributing country to the United Nations peacekeeping operations.

They also discussed the Rohingya crisis and its possible way out in view of the recently adopted Security Council’s Resolution on Myanmar.

They underscored the importance of ASEAN’s leadership in resolving the crisis.

The UN’s support for the forcibly displaced Rohingyas going back to their ancestral home in Myanmar was repeated by the Secretary-General, who expressed his gratitude to Bangladesh for providing shelter to 1.2 million Rohingyas.

the Under-Secretary-General for Department of Peacebuilding and Political Affairs (DPPA), Rosemary DiCarlo, and the Under-Secretary-General for Department of Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, earlier in the day (DPO).

Among the attendees at those talks was Ambassador Muhammad Abdul Muhith, the Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the UN in New York.
