BOU and Columbia University sign an agreement on research and teaching related to climate

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by Bangladesh Open University (BOU) and Columbia University (CU), New York, with the intention of fostering academic programs and cross-disciplinary research collaboration, particularly in the area of climate change challenges.

According to a BOU press statement issued here today, the MoU will also cover faculty exchange and building training programs between the two universities over the course of the following three years.

The agreement was been signed at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) in New York by renowned geologist and expert on natural hazards Professor Dr Syed Humayun Akhter, vice chancellor of BOU, and CU Provost Mary C. Boyce.

The statement states that in accordance with the MoU, the two universities will host collaborative seminars, workshops, and conferences.

Speaking about the potential of the MoU, BOU Vice Chancellor Dr. Akhter expressed the expectation that this arrangement will help the world achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13, which calls for swift action to tackle climate change and its effects.

According to him, BOU would collaborate with the CU to undertake formal and informal climate change programs using its extensive national network.

During a recent trip to the USA for the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting 2022, Dr. Akhter signed the agreement.
