Primary, secondary students in Bangladesh get new textbooks on New Year’s Day

Today, on January 1st, 2023, students in primary and secondary education received brand-new textbooks at no cost and participated in a nationwide “book festival.”

Dr. Dipu Moni, the education minister, participated in the secondary level “book festival” at the grounds of the Kapasia Government Pilot High School in Gazipur and gave books to the kids.

Speaking at the event with Technical and Madrasah Education Division Secretary Md Abu Bakr Siddique in the chair were State Minister for Education Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury, legislator Simeen Hussain (Rimi), and Senior Secretary Md Kamal Hossain.

Speaking at the book distribution event, Dr. Dipu Moni noted that since 2010, the government has given away over 434.46 crore in textbooks for free, which has significantly lowered the school dropout rate.

She also emphasized the importance of educating children to become “SMART Bangladesh” builders.

Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) Director General Professor Nehal Ahmed, Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) Director General Dr Md Omar Faruque, Directorate of Madrasha Education (DME) Director General Habibur Rahman, Gazipur Deputy Commissioner (DC) Anisur Rahman, Gazipur District Council Chairman Motahar Hossain Mollah and Kapasia Upazila Chairman Amanat Hossain also spoke at the programme, among others.

Around 2.20 crore pre-primary and primary level kids will receive more than 9.66 lakh textbooks in 2023, he added.

In addition to the book distribution, the Bangladesh Women’s Football Team’s five SAFF tournament champions, who came from the Bangamata Fazilatunnesa Mujib Primary School Tournament, were welcomed at the event.
