ILO and FBCCI collaborate to improve workplace security in 10 industries of Bangladesh

An agreement was reached today by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) to improve workplace health and safety in ten key economic sectors.

According to a press release, a range of capacity-building and marketing initiatives will be carried out under the agreement to promote workplace safety and health at institutional as well as corporate levels.

The ILO’s RMG program, which is sponsored by Canada and the Netherlands, will assist these initiatives.

In order to create a safety culture across ten industries—electronic and electrical, chemical, plastic, light engineering, leather, food processing, furniture, printing and packaging, residential RMG, and steel re-rolling—15 safety units will be developed as part of the program.

To increase knowledge of workplace safety and health among companies and employees, 2400 safety representatives and 100 safety committees will be established concurrently.

The agreement was signed at the FBCCI auditorium in the city in the presence of the Country Director of ILO Bangladesh, Tuomo Poutiainen, President of FBCCI, Md. Jashim Uddin, Senior Vice President of FBCCI, Mostofa Azad Chowdhury Babu, Directors of FBCCI, representatives from various industrial sectors, and business leaders.

Speaking on the occasion, Tuomo Poutiainen said, “ILO is pleased to join forces with FBCCI to promote safety culture and practices in priority industries. We hope that our collective efforts will help prevent many occupational accidents, injuries and diseases and save countless lives.”

All businesses in Bangladesh with 50 or more employees are required by law to form “safety committees” with an equal number of employee and employer representatives. Through the ILO-FBCCI program, 900 members of safety committees will get the knowledge and skills they need to better monitor, address, and communicate about safety-related concerns at their specific workplaces.
