On Thursday, in the midst of a fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, Peru extended the state of emergency.
As of August 1, the decision extends the state of emergency for 28 days.
“The national state of emergency will be extended due to the serious circumstances that affect the lives and health of people due to COVID-19,” the official newspaper “El Peruano,” said.
Peru is still on high alert in the midst of the latest wave, with an average of 11,000 new cases each day last week, according to government data.
The Health Ministry has distributed 80,336,753 doses of vaccine, 68.6% of which are for the third dose and 17.4% are for the fourth.
The World Health Organization reports that on Thursday, there were 14,186 new cases of the disease in Peru and 41 fatalities, bringing the country’s total to 3,873,702 cases and 214,120 fatalities.
